Bristol Rollapaluza: Results, report and photos.
We always guessed that a Rollapaluza in Bristol would be a success, but we were a little surpised with the amount of racers and spectators who turned out on a Wednesday night….amazing! thanks all for coming, we really enjoyed it and will definitely be back. We’re glad we chose Mud-Dock as the venue, what a wicked place thanks Matt, Jerry and all bike-shop and restaurant staff. Thanks too to Iron Horse for sponsoring and providing the excellent “Transit 0.0″ bikes as prizes.

Winner: Marcus Mumford

Male final on youtube here.
The Rollapaluza crew managed to rattle through 71 qualifiers in the early hours of the evening…this is one of the highest entries in Rollapaluza and modern roller-race history…coming close to the 88 racers at Rollapaluza Kingspin earlier in the year.
39 male racers came in under 23 seconds (Shaggy just scraped in there)…these are fast times and the qualification cut off time of 22.32 is amazing…..so many riders came cose to this time but not close enough. Some clear early favourites emerged with three riders going under 21 seconds but none of these were to become the eventual winner. Mud Dock manager Matt Carr (World 24h single speed record holder) found his legs less suited to sprinting, qualifying in only 58th place, however Duncan ferris (four cross racer) another Mud Dock employee set a blistering time of 20.04, impressive for his first attempt at Rollapaluza.
8 brave women signed up to race in the female event and Sarah looked good for the win early on with her time being nearly two seconds faster than any of the other ladies. Rollapaluza friend and Winston’s ex workmate form London courier days rolled in to a stylish last place…four seconds behind Sarah.
Male First Round:
Rollapaluza rules dictate that the fastest qualifiers compete against the slowest, and the form-book was followed for the first few heats until Marcus sensationally overhauled Jamie, shaving over a second off his time, Barney also beat faster qualifier Ben but pro-cyclist Simon Richardson (Plowman Craven) just managed to squeeze through to the next round.
1. Duncan Ferris (20.46) bt Pete Brookbank (22.98)
2. Andy Magnier (20.96) bt John Russell (22.17)
3. Dan Bowen (20.5) bt Dave Coghill (22.7)
4. Rob Reed (20.45) bt Richrd Sanders (22.23)
5. Greg Pittam (20.67) bt James Armstrong (21.07)
6. Marcus Mumford (20.75) bt Jamie Howard (21.58)
7. Barney Wreyford (20.48) bt Ben Brown (21.75
8. Simon Richardson (20.81) bt Chris White (21.02)
Male Quarter Finals:
Racing really started to get close in the quarters, Duncan knocked out road pro Simon becoming the 10th person in Rollapaluza History to go under 20 seconds…..Marcus continued to improve but amazingly had to struggle through two dead heats (and re-runs) with Dan to continue.
1. Duncan Ferris (19.9) bt Simon Richardson (20.54)
2. Andy Magnier (20.4) bt Barney Wreyford (20.68)
3. Marcus Mumford (20.38) bt Dan Bowen (20.88)
4. Rob Reed (20.48) bt Greg Pittam (20.24)
Female Semi Finals:
The two favourites sailed theough this round, however Sarah slowed a little while Nicky got considerably faster!
1. Sarah Barber (24.96) bt Karen Hathway (25.96)
2. Nicky Russell (24.73) bt Fi Spotwood (25.37)
Male Semi finals:
Duncan continued what looked like his destiny, thrashing Greg in the first semi and historically slipping under 20 seconds to record the fifth fastest Rollapaluza time (of over 7000 participants) and Marcus continued to improve hid time and defeated Andy.
1. Duncan Ferris (19.75) bt Greg Pittam (20.84)
2. Marcus Mumford (2.59) bt Andy Magnier (20.68)
Female Finals:
In the minor final for 3rd and 4th place, Fi set a much faster time, a time that might have got her into the major final, but she was only racing for third.
Sarah always looked like she was going to win and she didn’t disappoint beating Nicki into second place.
1st. Sarah Barber
2nd. Nicky Russell
3rd. Fi Spotswood
4th. Karen Hathaway
[nggallery id="77"]Male Finals:
In the minor final Andy posted his fastest time of the night to claim third place form Greg.
We keep “forgetting” to tell the riders that the Rollapaluza male finals are held over double the distance….1km! Ooops! Duncan and Marcus might have had something to say but we couldn’t hear them for the crowd cheering in agreement of the decision to race a full kilo…in the end the longer distance benfited Marcus who was clearly slower than Duncan and some way behind, until about 350 to go when Duncan started to tire and Marcus’s endurance paid off as he passed him and continued to the win!
1st. Marcus Mumford
2nd. Duncan Ferris
3rd. Andy Magnier
4th. Greg Pittam
[nggallery id="74"]Male and female winners walked away with a brand new Iron Horse “transit 0.0″ fixed / single speed bike….nice!
