All good things must come to an end, even our winter league. And so round 4, the grand finale was the last in our record-smashing London series and we returned to the fantastic Half Moon with sponsorship from Mosquito Bikes.
With all the usual suspects in attendance we were expecting a raucous crowd, super-close racing and some new records, we were not to be disappointed…
Everyone expected to see current supremo Miles Stovold post the fastest qualifier, but the shock came when he was pushed out by two-hundreths of a second by team mate and namesake Miles “Kilo” Annon as they rode together in qualifying. “Kilo” wasn’t to repeat his feat however, and was knocked out by only a fraction in the 1/4 finals by Rhys Gruffydd who’s been getting better and better. We weren’t to see any faster times than qualifying though, but we did see another final with the league leader Miles Stovold facing Rhys. Despite a valiant effort from Rhys, Miles stormed to another win, going under 21 seconds yet again and keeping his 100% winning record intact.
Third place was secured by last year’s league winner Matt Theobalds, beating Steve Aslin, who’d valiantly battled all night to his best finish of the league.
A special mention to paralympic world cup champion, Matt Plested who raced rollapaluza for the first time.
Women’s league leader, Dorchie Cockerell already had three wins on the board, and it needed something exceptional to keep her from making it four. Again her main challengers came in the shapes of Rollapaluza’s Estelle Rogers and Twickenham team mate Wiesia Kuczaj. Despite a great challenge from promising newcomer Nancy Gibson, Dorchie progressed to the final, posting a record time in the process! We saw another incredibly close semi final, where Estelle edged out Wiesia by just one hundreth of a second, putting Dorchie and Estelle together in the battle for 1st. For the 4th time this winter, Dorchie rode a perfect final and took the win.
Wiesia took third place in the minor final, with Nancy in fourth.
